The Democratic Alliance in the Eastern Cape is proud to announce the DA-led Kouga Municipality’s success to provide electricity to over 200 families from Donkerhoek.
Donkerhoek was an informal settlement that had to be formalised in order for us to give it the best services possible. That meant, Kouga Municipality had to survey plots and allocate specific plots to community members.
Through this game-changing initiative led by Executive Mayor Elza Van Lingen, Kouga Municipality was able to offer 247 families the ability to switch on lights for the first time.
Electricity means much more than a light being switched on. It means the ability to do homework and study at night. It is vital for economic growth and job creation, and create opportunities to bring an end to poverty.
Kouga Municipality has also managed to obtain an additional R4 million to assist in continuing with the electrification project.
This means, in addition to the 247 families that were offered access to electricity yesterday, another 116 homes in Donkerhoek will be electrified in the next few weeks.
Innovative and cost-effective solutions are necessary to give off-the-grid and hard-to-reach households access to electricity.
Where the DA governs, we will continue to ensure that municipalities are able to provide on-going access to much-needed electricity.
