DA-led Tshwane cuts international travel costs by over R7 million

14 Dec 2017 in Where We Govern

Upon assuming office following the 2016 Local Government Elections, Tshwane’s Mayoral Committee resolved that all international travel undertaken by the Executive Mayor, Solly Msimanga, MMCs and City Officials would be subject to strict scrutiny to assess the value for money and return on investment for the City.

As such the DA-led multi-party administration, under the leadership of Mayor Msimanga, is pleased to announce that it has managed to slash spending on international travel from R8.4 million to R1.4 million in just one year.

Specifically, Mayor Msimanga spent a total of R1 393 878 on international travel for the period August 2016 – August 2017. This is down from the R8 441 657 price tag for international travel for the previous ANC administration for the period August 2015 – August 2016.  (See Table 1 below)

This is a total reduction of R7 047 779.

Table 1:

“It was important, after assuming office, that we assess where the city was haemorrhaging money and that those holes were immediately plugged to ensure that all public funds were geared towards providing better services for our people. If myself or city officials had to undertake overseas travel;  it was important that it be to the benefit of the city and its people.”

– Mayor Solly Msimanga

The Msimanga administration is committed to ensuring that all public funds are used responsibly and for the purposes of providing better services which is our core mandate and not lavish travel that has no real value for the city and its people.
