Since the easing of the lockdown Western Cape Human Settlements Minister,
Tertuis Simmers, and DA-led municipalities have resumed the handover of both
houses and title deeds. Here are some highlights:

  • On the 27th of May 50 houses were handed over to beneficiaries as part of the
    Forest Village Housing Development in Eersteriver. The first of 267 beneficiaries
    that will be moving into the development.
  • On the 5th of June 33 beneficiaries in Areas F and H in Bredasdorp in the Cape
    Agulhas municipality received their homes. Area F, which as a budget of over
    R65,2 million, is set to yield 569 top structures and has already delivered 165 units.
    Area H, which has an allocation of more than R22,9 million, is expected to yield
    158 top structures, and thus far, it has already delivered 83 units.
  • On the 8th of June, 16 title deeds were handed over to elderly recipients in Delft
    as part of the Enhanced Extended Discounted Benefit Scheme (EEDBS), which
    promotes home ownership of pre-1994 government-owned rental housing. Most
    of the elderly residents had to wait between 24 and 29 years to receive their title
    deeds.
  • On the 10th of June, 26 title deeds were handed over to deserving recipients in
    the town Slangrivier in the Hessequa Municipality. This follows 143 title deeds
    that were handed over in February 2020. This area was governed by the Rural
    Areas Act 9 of 1987 and which meant that residents could not, by law, own land
    within the area.
  • Between 1 June 2019 and the start of the lockdown in March 2020, the DA-led
    government built 6 293 houses, while 1 381 title deeds were handed over.
