Mayor Dan Plato kicks off youth empowerment road show

05 Oct 2020 in Where We Govern

Cape Town Executive Mayor Dan Plato hosts youth outreach events in 12 communities, starting with Hanover Park and Coniston Park to involve young people in constructive mentorship programmes and skills development.

‘Our young people have a choice to work at being successful in their lives. The Office of the Mayor conducts outreach programmes to offer the youth an opportunity to join leadership camps, to be exposed to study opportunities and other life-changing initiatives such as the Life Counts programme. This is to focus their attention on building their hopes and dreams because we want our young people, despite the challenges of their environment, to have access to opportunities and to ultimately create a better future for themselves,’ said Executive Mayor Dan Plato.

The Executive Mayor also encouraged youth to make use of every opportunity to improve their lives. In Hanover Park and Coniston Park, the youth were addressed by motivational speakers such as Cole Davids, and religious leaders about spiritual enhancement, self-confidence, how to foster a positive image, the path to success and leading by example in respect of mentorship to their peers.

Each event is about three hours long, and includes workshops on study opportunities and development programmes. The event is followed up with the youth participating in the Life Counts programme where they are mentored in learnership opportunities, personal development programmes, leadership camps, fundraising initiatives and leisure programmes, among other such initiatives.

There will be 12 of these workshops across Cape Town in the following order on every Saturday until the 7 November 2020.

The locations are:

Wesbank
Delft
Atlantis
Mamre
Gugulethu
Manenberg
Matroosfontein
