During the 2019/20 Financial Year before the city was unlawfully placed under
administration by the provincial government. I had become increasingly concerned by
departmental reports that I had received which related to the conditions and burial
space that was fast running out at the Klip-Kruisfontein Cemetery in Soshanguve.
A threat that would have deprived local communities from burying their loved ones
close to where they live.
The departmental officials informed me that there was more than enough land, but
that it did not have sufficient resources to construct tar access roads on the remainder
of the cemetery.
In order to rectify this, we made a submission during the Adjustment Budget period to
move unspent capital funds to clear the site, develop a site plan, grade roads and
install high mast lights as an interim measure to provide more burial space.
Once the City was unlawfully placed under administration the work was delayed by
months.
However, I am can now announce that the City has completed the project and as a
result, we have expanded and capacitated the cemetery. Delivering on our
commitment to the residents of Soshanguve.
Residents will now be able to continue to give their loved ones dignified burials without
having to travel miles away.
This administration believes that the expansion and maintenance of cemeteries is a
crucial step towards providing families with a dignified space to lay their loved ones to
rest.
