City’s Informal Traders Webinar Programme aims to support local businesses

25 Nov 2020 in Where We Govern

On Monday, 23 November 2020, the City of Cape Town hosted a city-wide Informal Trader’s Webinar Programme.

Approximately 109 informal traders attended the Informal Traders Webinar Programme hosted by the City of Cape Town on Monday, 23 November 2020.

The objective of this programme is to continuously empower, support and assist local entrepreneurs in their business development.

‘This has been an extremely challenging year for traders and the City, but I am grateful that we can continue to work together to address the issues and challenges that we face.  Traders’ resilience during the past nine months of the COVID-19 pandemic is commendable.

‘The COVID-19 pandemic has made us seriously consider how we need to change the way we think and do things. We still have many issues to tackle together, but the City remains committed to creating meaningful and sustainable economic development opportunities for all its citizens.

‘I want to encourage every business owner to make use of the support programmes offered by the various stakeholders, so that their businesses can grow to new heights,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Management, Alderman Grant Twigg.

Some of the support offered to informal traders during this period include:

  • Issuing almost 8 000 toolkits to informal traders to help them take the necessary precautions to reopen safely.
  • Various training sessions.
  • The creation of new trading opportunities through the review of trading plans.
  • The employment of community ambassadors and Compliance Officers to improve safety in our trading spaces.

‘We are committed to doing all we can to support residents, traders and small business owners in providing some reassurance and comfort during this pandemic. I also want to wish every trader well during the upcoming festive season. As for some, this will be the busiest time for them,’ said Alderman Twigg.
