Subcouncil 6 provides annual funding for law enforcement efforts to improve safety and security in the area. Law enforcement officers are primarily responsible for the enforcement of City by-laws within the CBD and to ensure the safety of residents within the boundaries of the Subcouncil.

The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Management, Alderman Grant Twigg, Subcouncil 6 chairperson Councillor Mercia Kleinsmith, Ward 10 Councillor Jacoline Visser, Subcouncil 21 Chairperson Alderman Johan Van der Merwe, Subcouncil Manager Pat Jansen as well as Law Enforcement and other officials visited the Bellville CBD on Wednesday, 7 April 2021 for a walkabout.

‘The City’s Urban Management Directorate is pleased that from the Mayoral Urban Regeneration Programme (MURP) Funding Allocation, Subcouncil 6 has earmarked R1,4million for 18 light delivery vehicles (LDV) to be used in law enforcement efforts in the Bellville CBD,’ said Alderman Twigg.

‘We have noted concerns regarding enforcement within the Bellville CBD and we want people to feel safer. With this investment, we will hopefully see an improvement in responding to incidents of crime within the Subcouncil in general and the CBD in particular. We believe that this MURP investment will also help bolster efforts to address crime in the CBD and will make commuters and the general public feels safer,’ said Subcouncil Chairperson, Mercia Kleinsmith.

‘The safety of our residents remains our priority and this additional investment is proof that the City is working together to ensure that we address this. The additional resources will enable Law Enforcement to carry out their interventions and collect discarded items that residents and the business communities regularly complain about,’ said Alderman JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security.

‘This initiative demonstrates the City’s commitment to create a safe, caring, and well-run city. As a City, we will continue to make every effort to work together with other roleplayers and the public so that collectively, we can improve and uplift our communities,’ said Alderman Twigg.
